Basel lies in the North West region of Switzerland and shares its borders with France and Germany.

This tri-national region better known as Dreilȁnderecke is a gateway to the Swiss Jura and the city of Zurich. Its neighbouring borders also include the German black forests and French Alsace creating plentiful things to fill your time.

Basel itself is split in two (greater and lesser Basel) by the Rhine and is linked by a number of bridges (5 in total) dating back to 13th century.

The first bridge was built in 1225 and for a long time this was the only means of travelling over the river. This has now been replaced by the Mittlere Rheinbrűcke or Middle Rhine Bridge to the English.

Basel is often overlooked as a tourist destination of Switzerland however this city has as much to offer as the other great cities of Switzerland, such as travelling through time in Basel’s Old Town.
The buildings in the Old Town have a distinct medieval style and date as far back as the 15th century and blend with the more modern architecture of many renowned architects.

Basil is host to a number of buildings designed by a number of international architects, including the Vitra and the Beyeler Foundation built by Renzo Piano. As a result of the great architecture the city received the Walker Prize in 1996.

In today’s times the cultural traditions of Basel can be seen in the Museums, art galleries and even schools. The wealth of history and culture has resulted in the city being known as an international market place for art and antiquities.

The citizen’s appreciation for art and in particular Picasso, resulted in a referendum to purchase two of his famous works, The Seated Harlequin and The Two Brothers.

Picasso was so touched by the behaviour of Basal’s citizens that donated four more paintings to the town.

Basal is generally a self-restrained city, however at carnival time it is very different story. If you are lucky enough to be in Basel for the Fasnacht prepare to be amazed as this three day carnival is likely to be one of the most amazing carnivals you will ever see. Just one word of caution, don’t expect to get much sleep if you are there during this time.

A must see if you are in Basel is the Cathedral which will leave a lasting impression with its red sand stone walls and multicoloured roof tiles. The Cathedral is a dominant feature of the city and as history goes the urban settlement of Basel began on the Cathedral hill.
